If you are a resident of the great state of New Jersey, or simply passing through, congratulate yourself: You’re currently in the state that provides the most widely available palette of sports betting options.
Sure Nevada and Mississippi and might have more land-based books, but only in New Jersey can bettors roll the dice onto a 3-leg parlay without ever once having to stop by the casino. And as your setting that bet, make sure you thank the U.S. Supreme Court, which in May 2018 lifted the federal ban on sports betting, otherwise known as PASPA.
We should also extend thanks to New Jersey lawmakers for quickly passing legislation which establish the tax rate on internet sports wagering reduced, and also for not putting unnecessary restrictions on operators that would interfere with the growth of the business. Ultimately, NJ sports gambling could have never went live quickly if it were not for the nation’s regulatory body, the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement, that has provided oversight for the state’s internet casino and gambling industries since 2013, allowing regulators to make the transition to online sports betting that much simpler.
Whether new to sports wagering or some seasoned sharp, we’ve got you covered with a comprehensive look at the legal NJ online sports gambling market, covering online and mobile sportsbooks that legally take bets, what you’ll have to do to get started, and a return on how legal sports gambling in the Garden State turned into a reality. Not an internet guy or gal? We are going to touch on the nation’s physical sportsbooks too.

Getting started at NJ online sportsbooks
Based on whether you’re already involved in the NJ online casino or poker scene, it will take anywhere from zero seconds to no more than 5 minutes to place your first wager. That is, pending you fulfill a couple of eligibility requirements:
Under 21? Hold all stakes It doesn’t matter how old you might be, if you are under the age of 21, you cannot enroll an internet sports betting accounts at New Jersey. This is the identical age requirement used by Atlantic City casinos and the state’s online gambling and poker websites. 18-year-olds might have to adhere to betting on the ponies and the lottery.
Both feet in New Jersey
Players do not need to necessarily be in New Jersey to register and fund their sportsbook accounts, but in order to play real-money, they need to have both feet planted in the Garden State. Notice that doesn’t mean that they have to hold residence in New Jersey, rather they merely have to be physically located inside its boundaries.
So a bettor out of a neighboring country like Pennsylvania or New York may see the New Jersey traces (on most sites), enroll and fund an account and then head to that Starbucks right across the border to put real-money wagers, so long as they have an established Wi-Fi or 4G connection.
Registering an account
For all those involved in daily fantasy or NJ online casino/poker, registration on most online sportsbooks is a cinch. That’s because many operators have woven their sports gambling sites into their current platforms. Have a Play SugarHouse casino account? No need to register to your sportsbook. Same is true for DraftKings DFS account holders, and those enrolled with Betfair Casino, that employs the exact same registration info since FanDuel Sportsbook. Easy.
Registration SSN
Only the last four digits of your SSN required!
For the remainder, registration is an easy two-step process, first requiring that gamers enter some details about their person, such as their social security number (but generally only the last four digits). Then their advice is vetted using a rigorous verification procedure, used to make sure that player identities are protected from any shady deeds. This process takes only a couple of seconds, and then players are free to make their first deposit.
Funding an account
While many online sportsbooks at New Jersey provide no-deposit bonuses for new players, those who want to make more than a few wagers will likely have to make a deposit. Here is the good news: Depositing funds on a NJ online sportsbook is easy, largely because most operators are successfully managing payment processing for ages. The kinks, by and large, have been exercised.
Bettors will find that just about every single sportsbook accepts many different payment methods such as ACH, credit/debit cards, prepaid card alternatives, and PayPal, with all transactions processing close instantly. Additionally, there are a plethora of ways to get money off the site, with rapid turnaround times. So no need to worry if that +1000 bet comes from and you would like to lock up the win.
Word to the wise: When initial financing an NJ online sports betting account, make sure you use one of those hyperlinks on this page or on our review pages to make sure you receive the utmost welcome bonus for new players.

Particular features: In-play, money out, active promotional program To say that FanDuel online sportsbook has a great deal going for it would be a fairly gross understatement. Forgetting about its massive daily dream database for a moment, FanDuel recently merged with industry sharp Paddy Power Betfair (forming the FanDuel Group), meaning it’s one of the most adept sportsbook vets in its own corner. Together, and with a bit of assistance from IGT, they’ve made a book that’s largely loved from the NJ sports gambling community, not to mention that the team at US Bets as well.

Welcome bonus: Matched free wager up to $500
Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile programs: iOS and Android
Integration ties: DraftKings Daily Fantasy (stage, partial wallet)
Particular characteristics: In-play, cash out
Surprisingly, it was daily fantasy operator DraftKings rather than an Atlantic City brand that launched the first online sports betting site in New Jersey. That first-mover status, together with DK’s crazy big user database, connection with advanced tech provider Kambi, and competitive marketing has paid off big, as DraftKings is without question the industry’s historical market share leader. Whether it’ll stay on top remains a significant question, as rivalry is becoming fierce, and the»juice» on DraftKings trends a bit higher relative to other sites.

Tech spouses: The Stars Group (parent company)
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: PokerStars NJ (wallet, cellular platform)
Special features: In-play, cash out, Spin & Bet
BetStars is no stranger to the internet sports gambling space, having started an international merchandise in 2015 that has grown quicker than Lebron James’ net value. It’s also the sister brand of a little online poker website that you may have heard of: PokerStars. Ironically, BetStars NJ — licensed under Resorts Digital — has not made much noise however, due in part to its late launch on iOS and the lack of a PC platform. Nonetheless, it’s making up for lost time by depositing more promotions than you can shake a stick at. That, together with its slick user interface, cutesy game formats such as Spin & Bet, and powerful branding guide us to believe it is going attract a reasonable number of punters.
BetStars NJ for Android
Interesting fact: BetStars NJ loves to provide increased chances on 3-leg NFL parlays. Be on the lookout for those Super Boosts.
Perform SugarHouse Sports
Launch date: August 23, 2018

Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: Perform SugarHouse Casino (wallet, platform)
Special features: In-play, money out, complete cellular integration
When Play SugarHouse, operated by Rush Street Interactive, burst upon the NJ online casino scene in September 2016, it was pretty much an afterthought. But players quickly noticed that the site did almost every aspect of iGaming better than anybody else. Suffice it to say, the site warms up, and we expect its completely incorporated sportsbook to perform very well as well. Beyond its leading reputation, Play SugarHouse offers a lot of bets (both pre-game and live), an aggressive and easy-to-clear welcome bonus, free bingo games, and a loyalty program that actually matters. And now that it’s aligned with Monmouth Park it can provide wagers on NBA games — it could not do while partnered with Golden Nugget AC.

Fun fact: The number of accessible in-play bets for any specific contest is typically in the dozens, or even hundreds.
888sport NJ
Launch date: September 10, 2018
Welcome bonus: $10 free + 100% up to $500 (6x playthrough)
Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: 888casino, 888poker (wallet, loose ties to stage )
Particular features: In-play, money out
Much like BetStars NJ, 888sport has been established in different jurisdictions long before it set sail to the U.S. to not mention, parent company 888 Holdings, partnered with Caesars in Atlantic City, has been an active participant at the NJ iGaming marketplace since 2013, supporting both online casino (888casino) and poker (888poker) sites. All this bodes favorably for 888sport NJ’s potential, as does its own partnership with Kambi, heaps of betting markets, and slick interface. Nevertheless, the playthrough requirements on bonuses are tough, and some of the lines have something to be desired, so we do wonder just how large a market it will carve out.
888sport NJ desktop and Cellular views Interesting fact: 888sport is just one of the very few NJ online sports betting sites where gamers can land a bonus without having to commit a nickel.
Caesars Sportsbook
Launch date: September 6, 2018

Special features: full mobile integration, earn Total Rewards credits online For a company that has tons of experience in the mobile sports gambling sphere, Caesars convinced disappointed with the first launch of its internet sportsbook in New Jersey. The lines are positive, no doubt, but there’s just not enough of them, such as no in-play option. Nevertheless, the groundwork of a good app was set up, since the sportsbook has already been integrated into Caesars’ favorite internet casino program, with sports wagers awarding Total Rewards level and benefits credits. The cashier can also be top-notch, including PayPal, ACH payments and a slew of other options. There is just no sports specific welcome package and very little to bet , and that should change.
Caesars NJ Sportsbook — desktop and mobile app Interesting Fact: Sports bettors may redeem their got online Full Rewards rewards credits for on-site money or for use at any of the nearly 40 Total Gains casinos.
playMGM Sportsbook
Launch date: August 22, 2018
Welcome bonus: None
Tech partners: IGT (technology ), GVC (joint venture)
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: playMGM Casino (wallet)
Special features: In-play
What do you get when you join one of the biggest casino brands in the world (who happens to support a renowned mobile sports gaming program in Nevada), a major gambling operator in GVC, and tech provided by IGT? Turns out, you get a fairly substandard app. Yes, playMGM Sportsbook is serviceable, offering a fair number of betting markets, strong lines, and a shared wallet with playMGM Casino. However, the lack of a unique welcome bonus, in-play, and really any sense of innovation holds it back. We anticipate improvements in the near future, which will include a desktop app, but for the time being, there simply is not anything special here.
playMGM Sports on Android
Fun Fact: playMGM sportsbook users can make freeplay rewards at playMGM Casino.

Welcome bonus: Bet $50, Get $50 cash

Particular features: In-play
In only a brief period of time, William Hill has established itself as a dominant force in the New Jersey sports gambling market. It operates branded books at Monmouth Park, Ocean Resort Casino, and Tropicana Casino. Complementing its land-based books is a sports wagering app available for iOS, Android, and desktopcomputer. The program isalso, well… average, supporting a solid variety of gambling markets, in-play, and offering a decent cashier. There’s nothing dazzling about it, at least not yet.
William Hill NJ on desktop computer and mobile
Interesting fact: William Hill is the only operator in New Jersey tasked with more than one land-based partner.
Land-based sportsbooks at New Jersey
If the many online sports betting sites out there in New Jersey are not sufficient to whet your wagering appetite, or if gambling over the Internet simply isn’t your thing, you will be very happy to know that New Jersey plays host to a range of land-based books. And decent news for you personally Central and Northern New Jerseyans, these brick & mortar books aren’t confined solely to Atlantic City, as conventional casino gaming is.
Casino sportsbooks
Currently, seven out of Atlantic City’s nine existing casinos comprise sportsbooks. Some are bigger (and more durable ) than others, however, we suspect that as the business ages, so too will the AC sportsbooks mature.

The country’s horsemen will also be heavily involved in the sports betting industry, with Monmouth Park and its enthusiastic operator Dennis Drazin cutting the ribbon on New Jersey’s initial playoff sportsbook, the Monmouth Park Sports Book by William Hill, on June 14, 2018.
This was followed just 1 month later by the debut of this FanDuel Sportsbook at the Meadowlands. Since, the Meadowlands has become the best earning land-based publication in New Jersey, which does not really shock given its powerful branding, closeness to New Jersey’s and New York’s main population centers, and of course, its perspective of MetLife Stadium — home of the New York Giants and Jets.
The nation’s third horseracing track, Freehold Raceway, has yet to dip its toe in the sport betting oceans, but its chances are looking great.
More NJ sportsbooks coming soon If you think New Jersey has a lot of sportsbook now, just wait.
On the land-based front, we don’t expect too much growth. With the launch of the William Hill Sports Book in Tropicana Casino, there is just two candidates left in Atlantic City to launch books. One, Hard Rock Casino, we hope to go live with a retail publication this year, as Hard Rock has already signed a Letter of Intent with Gambling Innovation Group to an omni-channel sportsbook platform.
As mentioned, Freehold Raceway, possessed by Penn National Gaming and Greenwood Gambling (proprietor of Parx Casino at Pennsylvania) is also a prime candidate to enter the land-based sports betting realm.
On the internet front, there’s a lot more space to maneuver as every sports betting license holder is eligible for three branded sites, or skins. Some, such as Monmouth Park and Resorts AC, have already debuted two skins, but many others, including heavyweights Tropicana, Hard Rock Casino, and Golden Nugget, have not launched any. Expect multiple AC-branded online sportsbooks to pop up in the not-so-distant future, and for other businesses such as the Kindred Group (currently aligned with Hard Rock Casino) and Australian-based PointsBet (partnered with all the Meadowlands) to also launching online publications in New Jersey.
When the smoke clears it will not be unheard of to find upwards of 30 online sportsbooks in New Jersey.
Regulations, taxes, and earnings It was just a few short weeks following the U.S. Supreme Court kicked PASPA to the wayside which New Jersey passed sports gambling legislation. The bill passed by unanimous vote in both chambers and has been signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy (who happened to put the initial bet at Monmouth Park later that week) on June 11.
Regulation of the industry was passed off to the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement, the same agency that manages oversight for Atlantic City casinos and online gaming websites in New Jersey. Fortunately, the nation had been primed to offer sports betting for many decades, enabling regulators to release emergency regulations only two days following Murphy penned the sports betting bill into law.
New Jersey law mandates that only qualified casinos and racetracks be qualified for a sports betting license, which online sportsbook operators have to be partnered with a license holder. Other points of interest:
The fee for a sports wagering permit was set at a minimum of $100,000
The tax rate is set at 8.5percent for land-based venues, and 13% for internet sites, with horsemen needed to pay an extra 1.25percent to the Department of Local Government Services at the Dept. of Community Affairs.
Permit holders are limited to three independently branded sites, or skins.
Wagering on college sports is permitted, unless a New Jersey college or university group is involved. Then it is a no-go.
License holders have a 270-day window (transactional waiver) to operate online sportsbooks at the absence of a bodily sportsbook.
New Jersey doesn’t pay an ethics fee to professional sports leagues in market for league and data oversight, nor will it probably ever.
In terms of manage, New Jersey books took $184 million in bets during September 2018. And from June — September, the industry produced over $40.4 million in earnings. Word is still out on exactly how big the industry will get, since there are still a great deal of books that have not established yet, and lots of would-be bettors are still not aware of the distinction between legal and offshore sites, or that legal sports gambling is even a thing. Industry analysts see NJ sports gambling topping out at just over $300 million in yearly revenue, which would render it an ever-so-slightly bigger moneymaker than in Nevada. We are inclined to concur with this investigation.
A brief history of New Jersey sports betting New Jersey’s battle to legalize sports gambling within its borders extends all the way back to 2009, when State Sen. Raymond Lesniak introduced sports gambling legislation. His bill would readily pass through voter referendum in 2011, leading then Governor Chris Christie to maneuver it into law the following year.
Regrettably there was one enormous roadblock, which was the skilled and Amateur Sports Protection Amendment (PASPA) of 1992. PASPA, driven by former New York Knick Bill Bradley, prohibited sports wagering in all but four states (and really just Nevada). Interestingly, New Jersey needed a one year window from the beginning of PASPA to pass legislation legalizing sports gambling from the state, but political turmoil doomed the campaign. Because of this, New Jersey was effectively closed from sports betting for another 25 decades.
Shortly after sports gambling regulations were published in August 2012, professional sports leagues filed a suit against Christie and New Jersey. The next several years were riddled with disappointment for New Jersey, since it first lost in the district courts, then twice at the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Then in June 2014, the nation was delivered yet another devastating blow, when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to take New Jersey’s appeal.
Additionally in 2014, the constantly staunch gaming proponent Lesniak went to work on new sports betting legislation that would function as a sort of PASPA workaround. Same effect, with New Jersey and Christie once again losing to the leagues in the courts. However, by this time, the prevailing attitude toward sports betting was starting to show some cracks. Directed by this, New Jersey once again asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear its case. This time, it approved, hearing oral arguments in Christie v. NCAA (afterwards Murphy v. NCAA) on December 4, 2017.
Five-and-a-half month later, on May 14, 2018, the Court announced its decision, voting 7-2 that PASPA violated the 10th amendment, and deeming it entirely unconstitutional by a 6-3 count. Just a few weeks later, New Jersey passed a brand new sports gambling bill, also at a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Monmouth Park sportsbook on June 14, 2018, the business was born.Today, it thrives.
