The 2019 World Grand Prix is a matter of days away along with the tournament looks wide open. The unique format in having to hit a double to begin the leghas lent itself to a lot of upsets through recent years. This means that there is a shock or two early on.
There are enjoying some brilliant darts at the moment and you can make a case for a complete host of the titles in the tournament. The fact it is possible to find Michael Van Gerwen in 15/8 is telling of his form just how receptive it is and recently. Hell sneak legs from opposition from nowhere. Since his sons arrival he appears to have become a lot more relaxed. His return to the Premier League saw him end in third position.
He reached two semi-finals in the Western Matchplay and New Zealand Masters. He then followed up with his PDC title of the year a month in the Players Championship in Barnsley. He arrives in Dublin in form and with many memories . With a good enough draw I think Wade is on the side at 25/1. As MVG knows after his jolt 2017 exit to the Scotsman, his very first game against John Henderson is going to not be a pushover. If Wade can get beyond that using some momentum I can see the Machine moving far in the championship.
My next bet is MICHAEL SMITH (best price 22-1). Certainly that important is just round the corner? He keeps knocking on the door at events and youd believe that he will go all of the way later or sooner. It was another impressive run in a big for the Bully Boy although he was unlucky at the World Matchplay final against Cross. He had some unsatisfactory exits from the Players Championship in Barnsley that might be a factor supporting his cost. As Smith always seems to put in a great run at the big events, this does not worry me, however.
His scoring capability is sensational and he could beat anyone, when he could land his doubles. He could be a frustrating player to watch and may be his own worst enemy sometimes. He works herself up too much over missed opportunities which he carries to the next leg as opposed to simply forgetting about it. Hes a joy to see, when he is on song though.
He has a quarter of the draw. Of course no games are easy but a player of Smiths calibre must get past Simon Whitlock and then Ian White or Joe Cullen in his first two games. I imagine hes more determined than ever to win that major he deserves. He has all of the ability in the world and I dont doubt hell go on to acquire many majors. This week offers a perfect chance to eliminate the mark.
