But, the wait to get a maiden Shanghai title of Nadal will now continue.
I am quite unhappy to announce that I will not have the ability to play in Shanghai this year. Its the second year in a row and also at China I have great fans, Nadal said in a statement.
However, as you probably know, I had an swelling in my left wrist throughout the Laver Cup and that I havent had the time to recover and practice to prepare. I hope to be back in Shanghai for your 2020 tournament.
The Grand Slam champion is final month on an 11-game winning streak, which included his US Open win.
Nadal has dropped one of the last 29 games, a series that contained his 12th French Open title in Rome and Montreal.
But his absence will give the opportunity to close the gap on the 33-year-old in the struggle to finish year-end world No 1 to defending Shanghai champion Djokovic.
The Serbian trailed Nadal from 1,960 points in the ATP Race to London but Djokovic could make 500 points when he triumphs in an additional 1,000 points if he still keeps his Shanghai crown and Tokyo this weekend.
